Remote Nursing Tax Tips: What You Can Deduct
Remote nurses have unique tax advantages. Here's what you can deduct and how to maximize your return.
Remote Nursing and Taxes
Working from home as a nurse opens up tax deductions that traditional clinical workers can't access. Here's what to know.
Home Office Deduction
This is the big one. If you have a dedicated space used EXCLUSIVELY for work, you can deduct a portion of your home expenses.
Two methods:
- Simplified Method: Deduct $5 per square foot, up to 300 sq ft ($1,500 max)
- Regular Method: Calculate the % of your home used for work and apply that % to actual expenses (rent/mortgage interest, utilities, insurance)
Critical rule: The space must be used ONLY for work. A desk in your bedroom doesn't qualify — a dedicated office does.
Equipment and Technology Deductions
Business use of:
- Computer and monitors
- Headsets and phone
- Office furniture (ergonomic chair, desk)
- Webcam and ring light
- Printer and supplies
If used for both work and personal, deduct the business-use percentage.
Internet and Phone
- Internet: Deduct business-use percentage (often 50-80% for remote workers)
- Cell phone: Same rule applies
Professional Development
Fully deductible:
- Certification exam fees (CCM, CPHQ, etc.)
- Continuing education courses
- Professional nursing association memberships
- Nursing journals and subscriptions
- Licensing fees and renewals
Employee vs. Self-Employed
Important distinction:
If you're a W-2 employee, the home office deduction was eliminated for most workers by the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Check with a tax professional.
If you're a 1099 contractor or self-employed, you CAN deduct business expenses on Schedule C. This is a significant advantage of contract nursing.
Medical Malpractice Insurance
If you pay for your own malpractice coverage, it's fully deductible as a business expense.
Keep Good Records
- Save receipts for all business purchases
- Track mileage if you travel for work (rare for remote)
- Document your home office space (photos help)
- Keep professional development certificates
Work With a Tax Professional
Given the complexity of remote work deductions, a CPA or enrolled agent who works with healthcare professionals is worth the investment. They typically save more than they cost.
