Remote Nursing and Night Shifts
Many nurses assume remote work means leaving shift work behind. For most remote nursing specialties, that's true. But telehealth is the exception.
Which Remote Roles Have Night Shifts?
Night shifts available (often):
- Telephone triage
- Telehealth acute care
- Crisis line nursing
- Remote patient monitoring (tele-ICU, RPM programs)
Always 9-5 (essentially):
- Case management
- Utilization review
- Insurance nursing
- Nurse informatics
- Nurse education
The Pay for Remote Night Shifts
Night differentials typically add $3-8/hour to base rates:
- Standard rate: $38/hr
- Night differential: +$5/hr = $43/hr
- Weekend differential: additional +$3-5/hr
A 12-hour weekend night shift at these rates = $576, well above daytime equivalents.
Why Some Nurses Choose Remote Nights
- Quieter queue (fewer calls, more focused work)
- Higher pay with differentials
- Fits childcare or family schedules
- Transition from bedside night shift without lifestyle disruption
Challenges of Remote Night Shifts
- Same circadian disruption as bedside nights
- No colleagues physically present for support
- Must maintain HIPAA compliance even at 3am
- Internet provider support may be slower at night
Transitioning OFF Night Shifts
The good news: once you've been in remote nursing 1-2 years, you'll have experience to transition to day shift case management or UR roles if you choose.
