Getting Your First 1,000 Hours of Case Management Experience
You need experience to get the job, but you need the job to get experience. Here's how to break the cycle.
The Experience Catch-22
'We require 2 years of case management experience.'
But how do you get case management experience if every job requires experience you don't have?
Here's how nurses break this cycle.
Strategy 1: Identify CM Tasks in Your Current Role
Many nurses do case management work without calling it that:
- Discharge planning = case management
- Care coordination = case management
- Patient advocacy = case management
- Connecting patients with community resources = case management
Rename these experiences on your resume using CM language:
- 'Coordinated discharge planning for 5-10 patients daily'
- 'Managed complex social and clinical needs for high-risk patients'
- 'Collaborated with interdisciplinary team on individualized care plans'
Strategy 2: Request a Transfer to Discharge Planning
If your hospital has a care coordination or discharge planning team:
- Request to transfer or rotate through this department
- Even 3-6 months builds meaningful experience
- You now have 'case management' on your resume
Strategy 3: Hospital Case Manager (Bridge Role)
Hospital-based case managers do both CM and social work functions. These roles often have lower experience requirements than insurance case managers and provide solid CM foundation.
Strategy 4: Care Management Coordinator
Below the RN case manager level, 'care coordinator' roles often have lower experience requirements. Take one to build experience, then step up.
Strategy 5: Target Small Companies and Start-Ups
Small telehealth companies and health tech start-ups are often more flexible about experience requirements than large insurers.
Strategy 6: CCM Enrollment (Even Without Experience)
Enrolling in a CCM prep course while applying signals commitment and fills the knowledge gap. Some employers will hire a motivated candidate who's actively working toward certification.
The Timeline
With intentional effort, most nurses can build qualifying CM experience within 12-18 months of starting this process.
